VLOG Newsletter 06/25 .:. September

Dear readers,

the widespread German ‘husbandry tier’ labelling also includes regulations on GMO-free animal feed. However, these are hidden in the details and hardly known. To make matters worse, these criteria have just been watered down.

GMO-free products are still very important to the vast majority of consumers, so an additional ‘Non GMO’ seal would help. In the run-up to Anuga 2025, we have taken a close look at this issue.

On the opening day of the trade fair, Anuga will also focus on the current challenges facing the food industry as a result of the upcoming new EU regulation on new genetic engineering (NGT) in a panel discussion organised by VLOG in collaboration with ENGA and IFOAM. The EU consultations on NGT will enter the next round in October, and in Germany the ministries are currently coordinating the federal government's position on this issue.

We look forward to seeing you at Anuga in Cologne from 4 to 8 October.
Feel free to make an appointment with us!

Husbandry tier 3 for pork: Two thirds still GMO-free

Animal husbandry labelling originally required GMO-free feed from tier 3 onwards. For pork, 22 of the 35 animal welfare labels at this level still maintain this claim, as a VLOG research revealed.

Husbandry tier and "Ohne Gentechnik": Please show both labels!

The animal husbandry tier includes also criteria for GMO-free animal feed. However, most consumers are unaware of this and would like to see an additional "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) label. This is shown by a detailed market research study commissioned by VLOG.

Anuga 2025: New genetic engineering – What is in store for "Ohne Gentechnik" and organic products?

The new genetic engineering regulation will be a topic of debates at Anuga 2025. On the opening day of the food fair, experts from the food industry, associations and the legal sector will debate the challenges ahead in a panel discussion.

"Genetic fingerprinting" enables detection test for NGT plants

With the help of the unique genetic pattern of a rice line, genetic modification was detected in a new study. The result of the study is an important step forward in the development of detection methods for plants produced using the so-called new genetic engineering techniques (NGT).

Campaign for GMO-free food enters the second round

Following last year's launch, a broad alliance of agricultural and food industry representatives and environmental protection organisations has once again called for a campaign for GMO-free agriculture and food production in 2025 with numerous events.

New VLOG Standard published

The VLOG Standard version 26.01 has been available on the website since 1 September. A new feature is the option to conduct remote audits under certain conditions. In addition, the annual notification of the stable space overview and analysis results of the group members will no longer be required from 2026 onwards. Both changes will reduce bureaucracy in the system and simplify it at several levels without compromising the security of the “Ohne Gentechnik” system. A summary of the key changes (revision document) and a Standard version in which all relevant changes are clearly highlighted as marginal notes can be found on the website. In addition, industry- and level-specific information documents are again available, listing only the relevant Standard changes. The VLOG Standard V26.01 will be mandatory from 1 January 2026.
