VLOG Newsletter 05/25 .:. August

Dear readers,

At our VLOG Forum in early July, we learned first-hand that EU consultations on the deregulation of new genetic engineering (NGT) have stalled. This gives the food industry an opportunity to once again highlight its key concerns, such as maintaining the requirement for full genetic engineering labelling.

The common claim by many proponents of deregulation that such labelling for NGT is too costly and hardly feasible was recently refuted in detail by VLOG Managing Director Alexander Hissting in a guest article for Tagesspiegel Background.

VLOG will take advantage of this newly gained political window of opportunity by, among other things, holding a panel round on the effects of the planned deregulation on “Ohne Gentechnik” and organic products on the opening day of this year's Anuga food fair in Cologne at the beginning of October.

We look forward to seeing you there and wish you a wonderful summer!

VLOG Forum 2025: Deregulation stalled – opportunity for “Ohne Gentechnik” and organic industry

EU consultations on the deregulation of new genetic engineering (NGT) have stalled. This gives the “Ohne Gentechnik” (Non-GMO) and organic sectors another opportunity to remind political decision-makers of the importance of mandatory labeling and traceability for NGT as well.

Labelling is feasible, even for new genetic engineering

Many proponents of genetic engineering vehemently oppose maintaining the labelling requirement for new genomic techniques (NGT) because they believe it is too costly. However, abolishing it would pose a much greater problem for the food industry.

Long-term positive trend for soybeans from Europe

Following the exceptional record crop year of 2024, the long-term trend in soy cultivation area in Europe continues to rise in the long run. This is good news for the food industry.

Lower risk classification of “NGT1“ plants scientifically untenable

According to the plans of the EU Commission, new genetically modified plants in the “NGT1“ category could be released in future without risk assessment and labelling because they allegedly pose a lower risk. This is scientifically not justifiable, as shown by a preliminary publication from the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN).

"Ohne Gentechnik" at Anuga 2025 in Cologne

At Anuga food fair 2025, the topic of “Ohne Gentechnik” will be prominently featured in a panel round on the opening day. The panel “New rules for new GMOs: What is in store for the organic and conventional Non-GMO sector?“ will take place on 4 October 2025 at 1 p.m. and will feature Eric Gall (IFOAM), attorney-at-law Dr Georg Buchholz, Fritz Konz (Tegut), Wolfgang Ahammer (VFI Oils for Life) and others. They will discuss this topic as part of Anuga Organic on Stage, moderated by Heike Moldenhauer (ENGA). VLOG will be on site throughout the food fair. If you would like to meet us there, please feel free to make an appointment at event@ohnegentechnik.org.

The European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) turned 5!

Five years ago, the European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) was founded in Brussels. Since then, it has developed into a strong and important voice for the Non-GMO industry on the EU level.
