VLOG Newsletter 06/22 .:. December

Dear readers,

the year 2022 has unsettled many certainties. There also was some uncertainty at first about sufficient availability of non-GMO feed after Russia's attack on Ukraine. This has now been dispelled. The oilseed harvests were good, Ukraine continues to supply an impressive amount despite the war, and Brazil is expanding the cultivation of GMO-free soybeans. All of this will be discussed at the International Non-GMO Summit in May.

Also in spring, the EU Commission will present its long-discussed proposal on the future handling of GMOs in Europe's fields and on Europe's plates. Until then, the debate will continue to grow in presence and intensity. Even more so after that.

So it is good that the party of the German chancellor, the Social Democrats, has now clearly declared its support for GMO-free agriculture and food on the occasion of the hearing on genetic engineering in the German parliament Bundestag. After all, there is a lot to preserve, as our new milk figures show.

We wish you a happy holiday season and a good start into the new year!

Almost 80 percent of milk in Germany is GMO-free

Almost four out of five litres of milk in Germany are produced without genetic engineering, the share is now almost 80 percent. Ten years ago, it was only five percent. This means, in just one decade, GMO-free milk has largely gone from being a niche product to becoming the standard. Most milk packs on supermarket shelves are now labelled with the "Ohne GenTechnik" (Non-GMO) seal.

Hearing in the German Parliament: Preserve genetic engineering regulations!

The rules on approval, risk assessment and labelling of genetic engineering in food and feed must not be eroded. This has become clear once again at an expert hearing in the German Parliament (Bundestag).

420,000 signatures for the preservation of food without genetic engineering

In front of the Federal Chancellery, exactly 420,757 signatures under the petition "Not behind our backs - no free pass for new genetic engineering in our food!" were handed over to Parliamentary State Secretary Bettina Hoffmann of the Federal Environment Ministry.

Lower Saxony: New government coalition for freedom from genetic engineering

The new “Red-Green” government of German state Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) has committed itself to freedom from genetic engineering in its coalition agreement. This is a good signal from this agricultural state.

Seed completely free of GMO contamination in 2022

GMO-free works well: For the first time in over ten years, no GMO contaminations were found in seed in 2022. Monitoring by authorities should include new genetic engineering.

The organic sector’s appeal: Preserve EU genetic engineering regulations!

The German organic associations, together with their umbrella organisation Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW – Organic Food Industry Federation), have again jointly opposed the EU Commission's plans to soften the EU's genetic engineering rules in a resolution.

Ethics Committee: Genetic engineering holds little promise against climate crisis

The Swiss Ethics Committee on Biotechnology (ECNH) considers the possibilities of new genetic engineering such as CRISPR to contribute quickly to climate adaptation in agriculture overrated and warns against betting on them.

Possibilities to use the "Ohne GenTechnik" seal

The "Ohne GenTechnik" seal can be used in various contexts. Depending on the intended use, there are different requirements, which you can find out about on this new website page.

Website with agenda online, registration starts this week

Plans for the "International Non-GMO Summit 2023" in Frankfurt in May are becoming more and more concrete. The agenda has largely been finalised, many speakers have been approached and a number have already confirmed their participation. The website is online, registration will start this week.
