VLOG Newsletter 01/25 .:. January

Dear readers,

The new year started with a new, though unconvincing, proposal on the deregulation of genetic engineering. It was said to have triggered a rare consensus - supporters and opponents are "united in confusion".

So deregulation is still not going to progress too quickly. And that's a good thing, as a new VLOG assessment suggests. The assessment was also very popular with everyone involved in the topic at the Green Week in Berlin.

What happens next with genetic engineering policy also depends on the outcome of the German Parliament (Bundestag) elections. In all likelihood, however, even a future governing coalition will not agree on that issue. Germany is therefore unlikely to remain a driving force at EU level when it comes to genetic engineering, either in one direction or the other.

We wish you a very good year 2025 and an interesting read!

Legal opinion: Unfair burdens for the food industry due to genetic engineering deregulation

The planned dilution of genetic engineering regulations in the EU would shift safety testing and liability risks for plants produced with new genetic engineering and the products derived from them from biotechnology businesses to the food industry. These hitherto unnoticed consequences of the EU Commission's plans to deregulate genetic engineering are highlighted in a new legal opinion by lawyer Dr Georg Buchholz from the Berlin law firm GGSC on behalf of the German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG).

International Green Week 2025: "Ohne Gentechnik" discussed

"Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) and new genetic engineering were the topics of discussion at the 2025 International Green Week in Berlin. The German Association Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) used the trade show for talks with politicians and other stakeholders.

Bundestag election 2025: What genetic engineering policy will Germany have?

A look at the German Parliament (Bundestag) election programmes shows what the parties have in mind when it comes to genetic engineering. Agriculture Minister Ă–zdemir reaffirms his commitment to transparency and freedom of choice. Organisations critical of genetic engineering launch an email campaign to coincide with the election.

New genetic engineering proposal from Poland not helpful

The current Polish Council Presidency has presented a new proposal for the future regulation of new genetic engineering in the EU. However, the key issues of labeling, risk assessment, liability and coexistence remain unresolved.

More field trials with plants from New Genetic Engineering in Europe

The number of experimental releases with plants from new genetic engineering (NGT) in Europe is increasing. In the UK, genetic engineering regulations have been largely deregulated and there are hardly any restrictions. Meanwhile, the EU Parliament has voted against new GMO import authorisations.
