VLOG Newsletter 03/25 .:. May

Dear readers,

Yesterday, the new German Bundestag has debated labelling and traceability of new genetic engineering (NGT) in one of its first sessions. A good opportunity to see how the new “Black-Red” coalition positions itself on this topic.

Both the coalition agreement and the new Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer personally are not bad omens for a decent regulation of NGTs in the interests of the “Ohne Gentechnik” (Non-GMO) industry, which accounts for over 17 billion euros in annual turnover.

However, we will have to continue to encourage the new German government in this endeavour. A new background paper from the European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) shows that labelling and traceability are also feasible for GMOs.

Meanwhile, the trilogue negotiations between the EU Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the EU Commission on the future regulation of NGTs have begun in Brussels. At our VLOG .:. Forum 2025 on 3 July, we will have the latest first-hand information on the round of negotiations just a few days beforehand.

We would be delighted if you could join us in Berlin!

Bundestag debates new genetic engineering

In one of its first specialised debates, the new German Parliament (Bundestag) has addressed the topic of new genetic engineering (NGT) at the request of the Greens Party yesterday. The debate can be viewed on bundestag.de

New German Agriculture Minister: A practitioner for decent genetic engineering regulations?

Alois Rainer is to be the new German Minister of Agriculture. The politician of the CSU party is well qualified to advocate genetic engineering regulations in the interests of the food industry.

Coalition Agreement: Positive signals for "Ohne Gentechnik"

The coalition agreement presented by the German parties CDU, CSU and SPD on 9 April 2025 contains positive signals for the GMO-free food industry. The CDU-CSU and SPD coalition is basically committing itself to the minimum requirement of a complete labelling obligation for new genetic engineering.

"Ohne Gentechnik" products sold for over 17 billion euros

In 2024, around 17.1 billion euros were spent on "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) food in Germany. The successful market is now counting on political support from the new German government.

VLOG .:. Forum 3 July 2025

On the morning of 3 July, this year's “Ohne Gentechnik” conference VLOG .:. Forum 2025 will take place at the Hotel Rossi in Berlin, Germany. Among other things, we will hear first-hand about the EU trilogue negotiations on the deregulation of new genetic engineering a few days beforehand. In a panel discussion, the new German government, the specialised politicians and the parliamentary groups in the new Bundestag will position themselves on the topic. There will also be expert information on the legal implications of deregulation for our industry. Save the date! Please note that the event will only be held in German.

Start of trilogue negotiations on the regulation of new genetic engineering

Representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers began negotiations on the regulation of new genetic engineering (NGT) in Strasbourg on 6 May 2025. A background paper by the European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) shows that consistent labelling of old and new genetic engineering would be possible.

Expert opinion: Planned deregulation of genetic engineering would violate international law

The EU Commission's deregulation plans for new genetic engineering (NGT) violate the "Cartagena Protocol". This is the conclusion of a legal opinion by international law expert Silja Vöneky on behalf of the German Ministry of Agriculture (BMEL).

Non-GMO Summit Brazil 2025: Cooperation from soy cultivation to the store counter

The Non-GMO Summit Brazil proved to be an important event for strengthening the "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) sector in Brazil. VLOG was one of several supporters of the event.

Sales of "Ohne Gentechnik" eggs doubled in past 5 years

In 2024, eggs with the "Ohne GenTechnik" (Non-GMO) seal were sold for over 1.6 billion euros, which is 6.4 percent more than in the previous year. Over the last five years, sales of labelled eggs have almost doubled, from around 0.8 billion euros in 2019.
