Dear readers,
Yesterday, the new German Bundestag has debated labelling and traceability of new genetic engineering (NGT) in one of its first sessions. A good opportunity to see how the new “Black-Red” coalition positions itself on this topic.
Both the coalition agreement and the new Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer personally are not bad omens for a decent regulation of NGTs in the interests of the “Ohne Gentechnik” (Non-GMO) industry, which accounts for over 17 billion euros in annual turnover.
However, we will have to continue to encourage the new German government in this endeavour. A new background paper from the European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) shows that labelling and traceability are also feasible for GMOs.
Meanwhile, the trilogue negotiations between the EU Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the EU Commission on the future regulation of NGTs have begun in Brussels. At our VLOG .:. Forum 2025 on 3 July, we will have the latest first-hand information on the round of negotiations just a few days beforehand.
We would be delighted if you could join us in Berlin!
