VLOG Newsletter 01/24 .:. January

Dear readers,

the impending abolition of transparency and freedom of choice with regard to genetic engineering in food was an important topic in politics and protests at the "Grüne Woche" [Green Week] in Berlin. In 2024, VLOG once again used the trade fair to hold talks with politicians from the German federal government an Parliamemt, federal states and the European Parliament as well as economic players.

The new initiative for freedom of choice regarding genetic engineering in food counted over 200 supporting businesses by the Green Week - are you already on board? Unfortunately, the vote in the European Parliament's Environment Committee was nevertheless unfavourable, but this is by no means the last word.

Next week, the full Parliament will vote on the future of European genetic engineering regulations. This is an important moment for the "Ohne Gentechnik" [Non GMO] sector to once again clearly communicate to all MEPs what is economically at stake.

We wish you an interesting read

Green Week: Commitments to freedom of choice regarding GMOs

The German Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) and Peter Hauk (CDU), his regional counterpart from Baden-Württemberg, made an explicit commitment to maintaining freedom of choice for genetically modified food at the "Grüne Woche" [Green Week] 2024 in Berlin. VLOG used the trade fair for talks with politicians. GMO free agriculture and food was also a central topic at the agricultural demonstration at the start of Green Week.

Over 200 businesses demand freedom of choice for GMO in food

An additional 197 businesses in the German food industry have joined the initiative founded two weeks ago for the preservation of labelling and freedom of choice for genetically modified food. The addressee, Manfred Weber (CSU), rejected the company bosses' urgent request for dialogue before a vote in the European Parliament on 24 January 2024.

The "Ohne GenTechnik" seal is a "certification mark" now

The "Ohne GenTechnik" seal is now as announced registered as a "certification mark". This type of label ensures that there is a tested quality standard behind it. The new seal also refers to a website where the certification criteria are explained. The new version can - and should, if possible - be used as standard from now.

Pro GMO vote: MEPs should not be deterred

In the Environment Committee (ENVI) of the European Parliament (EP), a majority has expressed its opposition to labelling, risk assessment and coexistence regulations for most new genetically engineered plants. The EP can still vote differently. This is by no means a final decision.

New business initiative for freedom of choice regarding GMOs in food

Well-known personalities from the German food industry have launched a new corporate initiative for the preservation of labeling and freedom of choice regarding genetically modified food. In a joint open letter, the heads of the companies Alb-Gold, Alnatura, Andechser, dm and Frosta demand the preservation of labeling and freedom of choice in regards to genetically modified foods.

No GMO in seed samples in 2023 – future uncertain

For the second year in a row, the Germany-wide analyses carried out by the official testing agencies revealed no traces of genetic engineering in the seeds sampled. In order to guarantee absence of genetic engineering in the future, EU genetic engineering regulations must not be diluted.
