VLOG Newsletter 08/25 .:. December

Dear readers,

The negotiations on the deregulation of new genetic techniques (NGT) in the EU, which have been ongoing for years, have finally reached an interim conclusion. However, for the food industry and consumers, it is anything but satisfactory. The European Parliament or the Council of Ministers can still reject it – and should definitely do so.

The EU Member States will vote on this in Brussels on 19 December 2025. Now is therefore the last and best opportunity to appeal to the German government and other politicians. The businesses Rewe, dm, Alnatura, dennree and Rapunzel have already seized this opportunity and attracted widespread attention with their open letter.

That is the good thing about the poor outcome of the “Trilogue”: There is renewed focus on the issue of GMOs in food. Suddenly, people are realising that GMOs may soon no longer be recognisable in supermarkets.

In any case, the issue will be highly topical at the beginning of 2026 and will be very much in the spotlight during the fair Green Week in Berlin in January. The Non-GMO Summit 2026 in May will then be the central opportunity for in-depth discussion on “Non-GMO“ in times of NGT and possible new regulations for it.

Enjoy reading and have a wonderful festive season!

Possible new EU regulations: Will GMO-free products soon be recognisable only by a seal?

If the agreement reached today in Brussels on new genetic engineering (NGT) were actually implemented, GMO-free foods would in the future only be reliably recognisable by an "Ohne GenTechnik" (Non-GMO) or organic seal. However, the European Parliament and Member States can still prevent this.

Maintaining GMO labelling: Businesses write urgent letter to MEPs

In an open letter, the German businesses REWE, dm, Alnatura, dennree and Rapunzel call on MEPs Manfred Weber, Jessica Polfjärd and Stefan Köhler (all EPP) to retain the full labelling requirement also for new genetic engineering.

Denmark wants to push through GMO deregulation in 2025

Although there was no decisive breakthrough in the second round of "trilogue" negotiations on the planned EU deregulation of new genetic engineering (NGT), the current Danish Presidency is determined to reach an agreement in 2025.

“Ohne GenTechnik” seal complies with new EU requirements on consumer protection

The EU wants to prevent “greenwashing” and misleading consumers with false environmental claims. A legal opinion shows that the “Ohne GenTechnik” (Non-GMO) seal already meets the new requirements.

International Non-GMO Summit on 13 May 2026 in Frankfurt

How will the "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) sector deal with new genetic engineering (NGT) in GMO-free feed and food chains?

Traces of genetic engineering found in maize sample during official seed testing

Genetically modified maize was detected in a seed sample in the German Free State of Saxony. The seed batch from France was destroyed before sowing.
