VLOG Newsletter 05/23 .:. November

Dear readers,

At our Anuga fair booth, we had many interesting conversations and guests, including Cem Özdemir, German Federal Minister of Agriculture. He will now have to make some efforts to keep his promise to protect "Ohne Gentechnik" and the organic sector.

Because in the European Parliament's Environment and Agriculture Committee, the first steps towards deregulating genetic engineering could be taken in the next few weeks. Some Members of Parliament want to deregulate even further than the EU Commission and would even like to abolish the complete ban on genetic engineering in the organic sector.

Over the next few weeks, it will therefore be particularly important to once again point out to politicians at all levels what would be at stake if genetic engineering were to be deregulated.

Autumnal greetings
Your VLOG team

Tomorrow first VLOG .:. Dialogue for members only: Register now!

Tomorrow, on Thursday, 9 November 2023 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm, we will be launching the "VLOG .:. Dialogue", our new internal online discussion event for members only. Around 40 representatives of member businesses have already registered. Join us and register by email by clicking on the arrow or picture. "New genetic engineering" is the obvious topic for the first VLOG .:. Dialogue. The EU Commission's proposal is polarising. Even in the case of deregulation of "Ohne Gentechnik", consumers and the law demand that CRISPR and co. also remain excluded. What is in store for us? How do we deal with it? We would like to discuss this with you openly and non-publicly. The discussion will be in German only.

VLOG at Anuga 2023: Successful trade show appearance

The outcome of VLOG's appearance at the Anuga food fair 2023 was positive all round. There were many good conversations and contacts. German Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir also visited us at the fair.

Aldi in favour of clear and comprehensive GMO labelling

The retailers Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have spoken out in favour of continuing to label products from new genetic engineering. This is an important signal from the retail industry.

Survey: "Ohne GenTechnik" should not include any new genetic engineering either

81 percent of people familiar with the "Ohne GenTechnik" (Non-GMO) seal expect it to exclude also new genetic engineering such as CRISPR. The EU Commission's deregulation plans are therefore a major challenge for producers and retailers.

Anuga: Food businesses call for preservation of GMO labelling

At the Anuga food fair, food manufacturers and retailers from REWE Group to Rapunzel Naturkost, together with the German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) and the Association of Organic Food Processors (AöL), have appealed to politicians in Berlin and Brussels to preserve the current full GMO labelling. In doing so, they are clearly rejecting the EU Commission's current plan to no longer label a large part of future GM foods and to no longer subject them to risk assessment.

Non-GMO Soy market has calmed down

After very high price premiums for GMO-free soybean meal in 2021 and 2022, the market continued to ease significantly in 2023.
