Aldi in favour of clear and comprehensive GMO labelling
When asked by the German Aurelia Foundation, the businesses explained: "ALDI Süd and ALDI Nord continue to support the labelling of products that have been modified using new genetic engineering in order to give our customers the freedom of choice you mentioned. To achieve this, we need the precautionary principle with an appropriate risk assessment and transparency along the supply chain."
EU Commission and European Parliament must preserve genetic engineering labelling
VLOG Managing Director Alexander Hissting comments: "Aldi, the second major retailer, has now clearly positioned itself in favour of consumer protection with regard to the EU Commission's current legislative proposal on the deregulation of genetic engineering. This is a very important signal, as the retail industry is the central interface between the preferences of consumers and food manufacturers. The EU Commission and the European Parliament cannot ignore this and must ensure that the comprehensive labelling obligation remains in place for all types of new genetic engineering - in contrast to the deregulation plans to date".
Rewe Group also wants to preserve labelling
At the Anuga food fair at the beginning of October 2023, the retailer Rewe Group, together with other businesses as well as VLOG and the Association of Organic Food Processors (AöL), had already spoken out in favour of approval procedures, risk assessment, traceability and labelling for new genetic engineering.
