VLOG Newsletter 04/23 .:. September

Dear Readers,

the debate about the future of GMO regulation in the EU is gaining momentum again. Contrary to the plans of the EU Commission, an overwhelming majority of Germans still want labelling and risk assessment for new GMOs as well. A new legal opinion shows that the planned deregulation would even be illegal.

In addition to consumers and the environment, the great successes of the "Non GMO" and organic food industry would be threatened. These include the consistently high share of GMO-free milk in Germany. This topic, among others, will also occupy us at the upcoming food fair Anuga 2023. You are welcome to visit us at our stand in Cologne!

After that, we are planning a series of further events this year and next year, which you should already mark in your diaries.

We look forward to the exchange with you!
Your VLOG team

Almost everyone wants labelling and risk assessment for new genetic engineering

92 percent of all Germans want new genetic engineering in food to be labelled at all times. As many as 96 percent endorse mandatory risk assessment for plants produced with CRISPR etc. The EU Commission is planning to abolish both.

Visit us at Anuga 2023 in Cologne!

In 2023, VLOG will again be represented at the Anuga fair in Cologne from 7-11 October. We are delighted to have been invited by the Federal Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVLH) to be part of its Retail Forum again. Our focus this time is on the booming vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes and their "Ohne Gentechnik" labelling, as well as the EU Commission's plans for genetic engineering deregulation. There will also be a separate event on this, see below. Beyond that, we welcome any exchange and are open to all your concerns. You can find us here: Koelnmesse, Boulevard, booth 048. Feel free to visit us spontaneously at any time - or make an appointment in advance at event@ohnegentechnik.org!

Anuga event for businesses and media on 10 October 2023

Clear and complete GM labelling is a must for consumers and the economy. VLOG and AöL, together with producers and retailers, want to show what is at stake if the deregulation plans of the EU commission come true. What can producers and retailers do to prevent this from happening? The event (in German only) will take place on 10 October 2023 from 11:00 a.m. in Conference Room 1-2 in the Congress Centre East at Koelnmesse and will be livestreamed.

GMO-free milk has become mainstream

Almost four out of every five litres of milk in Germany is produced GMO-free. In 2022, conventional "Ohne Gentechnik" [Non-GMO] (73.4 percent) and organic milk (4.3 percent) together accounted for almost 78 percent of the total milk volume in Germany.

Expert opinion: EU Commission's genetic engineering plans are illegal

The EU Commission's plans to deregulate genetic engineering violate the "EU Constitution", according to a legal opinion. For food manufacturers, the result would also be significant legal uncertainties. Should the proposed legislation actually be adopted, a lawsuit against it would have good chances of success. The expert opinion is a clear stop sign for the EU Commission.

EU Commission is about to to destroy sustainable business assets

On 5 July 2023, the EU Commission officially presented its plans for genetic engineering. If they were implemented, many GM food products would end up unlabelled on supermarket shelves. VLOG board member Bernhard Stoll called the proposal an "attack on the 'Ohne Gentechnik' and organic sectors, which together account for over 30 billion euros in sales in Germany alone".

"15 Years Ohne GenTechnik" Celebration and VLOG .:. Forum on 20 June 2024

In 2024, the "Ohne GenTechnik" seal will be 15 years old. We want to celebrate this in a fitting manner with an evening function on 20 June 2024 in Berlin. Beforehand, in the afternoon, the VLOG .:. Forum 2024 will take place in the afternoon with topical presentations, discussions and networking opportunities. Save the date and book a hotel room now if needed. Otherwise it could be tight because of the European Football Championship 2024.

Save the Date: Next Non-GMO Summit on 7/8 October 2024

After the successful launch in May 2023 (video recap on nongmosummit.com), the International Non-GMO Summit 2024 will again bring together companies along the entire value chain to inform about GMO-free production. We are thus creating a powerful platform to discuss deforestation-free commitments and current developments in new genetic engineering. The International Non-GMO Summit 2024 will take place on 7 and 8 October in Frankfurt, Germany. The Summit will be hosted by the by the key business associations in the Non-GMO market.
