GMO-free milk has become mainstream

- Almost four out of every five litres of milk in Germany is produced GMO-free. In 2022, conventional "Ohne Gentechnik" [Non-GMO] (73.4 percent) and organic milk (4.3 percent) together accounted for almost 78 percent of the total milk volume in Germany.

In recent years, the share has levelled off at between 75 and just under 80 percent. Ten years ago, it was less than ten percent. Most milk packs on supermarket shelves now bear the green "Ohne GenTechnik" seal. In just a decade, GMO-free milk has gone from niche product to standard.

Market share of 'Ohne Gentechnik' milk is stable at a very high level

"The 'Ohne Gentechnik' share of the milk market remains stable at a very high level. Market saturation has been reached and a further increase is hardly possible. Even in the crisis year 2022, contrary to all the prophecies of doom, there was no slump," says Alexander Hissting, Managing Director of the German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG).

For the remaining roughly 20 percent of milk, the absence of genetic engineering is likely to play a less important role due to the product portfolio and sales channels, analyses Dr Kerstin Keunecke, head of the dairy industry division at the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI). She says, the remaining volume is mainly produced in northern Germany, and the production program of the dairies located there is partly aimed at export. AMI collected the data for the VLOG.

Anuga 2023: Preserving freedom of choice and transparency

Alexander Hissting: "To ensure that consumers can continue to rely on GMO-free milk, VLOG will be campaigning at the upcoming food fair Anuga in Cologne for freedom of choice and transparency to be maintained."

VLOG will be present at the Anuga fair in Cologne from 7 to 11 October 2023 with a booth as part of the Retail Forum of the Federal Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVLH).
