VLOG Newsletter 03/23 .:. June

Dear readers,

The EU Commission's plans for genetic engineering have become known through a leak even before their planned publication on 5 July 2023. They do not bode well: transparency, freedom of choice and thus also the "Ohne Gentechnik" sector would be acutely threatened if they were implemented.

This advance leak has also caused quite a stir in the preparation of our VLOG .:. Forum on Thursday. It is obvious that we will deal with this topic there. We are pleased that we managed to organise a prominent panel on this topic in a very short time. This means that shortly after the International Non-GMO Summit, another exciting "Ohne Gentechnik" event is just around the corner.

We would be delighted to welcome you to this event in Berlin!

VLOG .:. Forum 2023 on the EU Commission's plans for genetic engineering

Recently, the EU Commission's plans for genetic engineering became known prematurely. We want and need to talk about this. On 29 June 2023 with our members, guests, a prominent panel with Renate Künast MdB (Greens Party), Annette Bruhns (Table.Media), Michaela Schröder (vzbv), Dr Momme Matthiesen (Ovid, Grain Club), Alexander Hissting (VLOG) and Heike Moldenhauer (ENGA) - and with you. Be there, on site in Berlin or in the livestream! The announcement article and the event are only available in German.

EU Commission: Concealing genetic engineering? A poor plan!

The EU Commission wants to abolish risk assessment, approval procedures, and compulsory labelling for a large segment of "new genetic engineering" plants. This would be the end of transparency and freedom of choice.

Non-GMO Summit 2023: A successful dialogue

The International Non-GMO Summit 2023 was a complete success. The 200 industry representatives from 19 countries and four continents - from soy cultivation to processing to food retailing - who met for the first time in this form in Frankfurt on 10 May 2023 agreed on this. The conference concluded that freedom from genetic engineering requires dialogue and cooperation along the entire production chain. Consumers want food that is produced without genetic engineering and deforestation. The feed for this are sufficiently available. Fair supply relationships and long-term contracts are necessary to ensure their cultivation.

New training material group organisation agriculture

VLOG provides new training material for the area of group organisation in agriculture in German language for download: Four presentations that prepare group organisers for their activities, provide assistance for training staff and, if necessary, group members, and can be used as support for upcoming audits. The training materials can be found here.

Infodienst Gentechnik is looking for support

For many years, the Genetic Engineering Information Service (Informationsdienst Gentechnik) has presented high-quality, well-researched critical news on the topic. In view of the upcoming EU re-regulation, the debate will intensify - and with it the need for well-founded reporting. Against this background, the portal is looking for new sponsors and institutional supporters who want to contribute to the financing of this important service.

Broad alliance opposes genetic engineering deregulation in Switzerland

In Switzerland, too, the future regulation of new genetic engineering is controversial, similar to the EU. The Federal Council there is working on a proposal on behalf of parliament, which it wants to present in 2024. The Swiss Alliance Gentechfrei has now published a position paper on the subject, supported by 60 organisations, entitled "Strictly regulate genetic engineering in the future too!".
