Dear readers,
After years of back-and-forth, Members of the European Parliament have now finally sealed the EU’s deregulation of New Genetic Technologies (NGT). Disappointingly, they have even waved through the near-total abolition of mandatory GMO labeling for food and failed to enforce an effective ban on seed patents - contrary to what the Parliament itself had decided just two years ago.
Media attention on GMOs in food is currently at a level not seen in a long time. Most reports focus on the impending loss of transparency in supermarkets. But this also means that if hidden GMOs could soon be present even in bread, beer, bananas, or baby food, an “Ohne Gentechnik” label will become even more important in the future.
To ensure that the “Ohne Gentechnik” system can continue to function reliably even under the new EU rules, VLOG is working intensively to adapt its Standard and is advocating for practical legal regulations at the national level.
Initial insights and outlooks on this topic were presented at the Non-GMO Summit in Frankfurt in May. The successful international business conference sent a strong signal for the future of the “Ohne Gentechnik” industry.
We hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and wish you a wonderful summer!
