VLOG Newsletter 04/26 .:. June

Dear readers,

After years of back-and-forth, Members of the European Parliament have now finally sealed the EU’s deregulation of New Genetic Technologies (NGT). Disappointingly, they have even waved through the near-total abolition of mandatory GMO labeling for food and failed to enforce an effective ban on seed patents - contrary to what the Parliament itself had decided just two years ago.

Media attention on GMOs in food is currently at a level not seen in a long time. Most reports focus on the impending loss of transparency in supermarkets. But this also means that if hidden GMOs could soon be present even in bread, beer, bananas, or baby food, an “Ohne Gentechnik” label will become even more important in the future.

To ensure that the “Ohne Gentechnik” system can continue to function reliably even under the new EU rules, VLOG is working intensively to adapt its Standard and is advocating for practical legal regulations at the national level.

Initial insights and outlooks on this topic were presented at the Non-GMO Summit in Frankfurt in May. The successful international business conference sent a strong signal for the future of the “Ohne Gentechnik” industry.

We hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and wish you a wonderful summer!

New EU rules: "Ohne Gentechnik" will require a seal in the future

The European Parliament has adopted the new EU regulations for so-called "new genetic engineering" (NGT). Consumers will soon only be able to tell whether food was produced without the use of genetic engineering by looking for voluntary "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) and Organic seals.

Ahead of the EU decision: Also New Genetic Engineering must remain clearly identifiable

This week, the European Parliament could give final approval to the new EU regulations on genetic engineering. This would mean that "new" genetic engineering in food would, in most cases, no longer be identifiable to consumers – even though, as a new study shows, this is important to the majority of them. Only voluntary labels would then continue to provide clarity.

International Non-GMO Summit 2026: Strong signal - “Non-GMO” has a future!

Food labelling such as “Non-GMO” and Organic is set to become even more important in the future as a result of the EU’s planned deregulation of new genomic techniques (NGTs). According to the conclusions of the Non-GMO Summit 2026, the agriculture and food sectors can — and will — rise to the challenges associated with the new rules.

“Ohne Gentechnik” without New Genetic Engineering: International Associations Collaborate

“Ohne Gentechnik” (Non-GMO) should, must and will continue to exclude the use of New Genetic Engineering (NGT). VLOG is currently working with other European associations to develop a strategy for how this can continue to function even after the planned EU deregulation of New Genetic Engineering (NGT).

Legal opinion: Planned deregulation of genetic engineering would be unlawful

According to a new legal opinion, the planned deregulation of new genetic engineering (NGT) – which has since been confirmed in the trilogue between Member States and the European Parliament – would be unlawful.

Detection methods: Plants produced using "new genetic engineering" can be identified specifically and unambiguously

Using existing methods, plants produced using "new genetic engineering" are usually not analytically detectable. However, scientists have now developed a method for the specific unambiguous detection of individual NGT plant lines.

“New GMOs Market Report”: There is a wide gap between hype and market reality regarding new genetic engineering

New genetic engineering (NGT) has so far played virtually no role in practice worldwide, and promises of sustainability remain unproven. Nevertheless, the legal regulations governing it are being rapidly eroded in many places.
