VLOG Newsletter 05/22 .:. October

Dear readers,

will genetic engineering in food remain recognisable to consumers? The debate is gaining momentum. In a less than transparent "targeted" survey of selected stakeholders, it became clear that the EU Commission already has quite specific plans for deregulation. There was and still is a lot of criticism for this, and for good reason.

It is important that the "Ohne Gentechnik" [Non GMO] sector continues to clearly communicate to the political decision-makers in Brussels and Berlin at every opportunity that GMO deregulation would destroy consumer confidence and cause massive economic damage.

We are also keeping up, because this is part of the VLOG mission. What else is part of it, can be found in the new VLOG mission statement, which we have now developed for the first time.

Foodwatch campaign: Genetic engineering must remain identifiable!

In a new online campaign, the consumer organisation Foodwatch calls on the German Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir and the German Minister of the Environment Steffi Lemke to clearly rebuff the EU Commission's plans to deregulate new genetic engineering.

Will it be necessary to rerun the EU genetic engineering survey?

In an open letter, 40 European organisations strongly criticise the EU Commission's consultation procedure on new genetic engineering and demand for it to to be partly rerun.

Update of the VLOG Standard

In its new version 23.01, the VLOG Standard is for the first time divided into sector-specific parts to make it clearer and easier to handle. Our Standard website has also been extensively restructured accordingly. We hope you will now find it even easier to find your way around! The new version will apply as usual from 1 January of the coming year.

Mission Statement: What does the VLOG stand for?

What does the VLOG stand for, what do we want to achieve? In our newly completed Mission Statement, we describe our self-concept, our goals and our basic principles. The VLOG team and two members of the Executive Board on behalf of the membership have worked together on four chapters.

Save the Date: International Non-GMO Summit 2023

On 9/10 May 2023, the "International Non-GMO Summit 2023" in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, will bring together producers and traders from South America and Europe with food traders and brands from Europe to exchange views on the availability and production needs of non-GMO crops as well as sustainability, deforestation and non-GMO strategies. A direct open exchange between all stakeholders is crucial for building stable, fair and long-term value chains for sustainably produced crops in Europe and worldwide. VLOG is preparing this interntional non-GMO summit at the Hilton Frankfurt Airport together with ENGA, ProTerra Foundation, Donau Soja and ARGE Gentechnik-frei. A room contingent at the conference hotel will be made available with the invitation to the event.
