VLOG Newsletter 06/26 .:. September

Dear readers,

From July 2028, consumers will no longer be able to reliably tell when shopping whether genetic engineering has been used in the production of their food. Under the new EU NGT Regulation, the previous legal labelling requirement for New-Genetic-Engineering-plants in the "NGT1" category will no longer apply from that date.

This makes it all the more important for products in supermarkets to carry a "Ohne Gentechnik“ (Non-GMO) label that also excludes NGT1. The vast majority of consumers expect retailers to ensure transparency in this way.

Our industry now faces the major challenge of effectively excluding NGT1 from its value chains as well. To this end, it would be very helpful if the existing national protective regulations governing the cultivation of genetically modified organisms were to continue to apply to NGT1 in future, as our legal opinion confirms is both possible and necessary. The "Ohne Gentechnik“ sector now needs to do a great deal more to persuade policymakers – and in particular the Federal Ministry of Agriculture – to implement this accordingly. Please do support us in this endeavour! Furthermore, VLOG is revising its Standard in consultation with numerous experts from the field to ensure that NGT1 is reliably excluded from "Ohne Gentechnik" in future.

We hope you find this an interesting read!

Consumers: Retailers should clearly label products "Without New Genetic Engineering"

From in mid-2028, the statutory labelling requirement will no longer apply to the majority of products produced using New Genetic Engineering (NGT). A large majority of consumers expect food retailers to clearly indicate which products were not produced using NGT.

VLOG meets with SPD MPs for an exchange in the Bundestag

The Association Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) held consultations with SPD MPs Isabel Mackensen-Geis and David Mandrella on the future of "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO).

Enterprises, associations, and a Member State take legal action against the EU deregulation of NGT

An alliance of organisations from the agricultural and food sectors is seeking to block the EU Regulation on New Genetic Engineering (NGT Regulation) through legal means and has brought a case against it before the General Court of the European Union (GC). Slovakia, an EU Member State, has also lodged its previously announced legal action.

South Korea extends mandatory labelling of Genetic Engineering

South Korea is gradually extending the mandatory labelling requirements for genetically modified foods. Until now, sauces, pastes, sugar, cooking oils and fats had been exempt from these requirements.

Court bans overly general environmental advertising claim

The Deutsche Umweltilfe (DUH), a nonprofit environmental and consumer-protection organisation, has successfully taken legal action against the discount retail chain Netto, ordering it to cease advertising using the general claim “good feed from environmentally friendly cultivation”, which was based solely on the animal feed being free from genetically modified organisms.
