VLOG Newsletter 02/26 .:. March

Dear readers,

At least from us there is some good news: Sales of “Ohne Gentechnik" products have continued to grow, with a further billion euros spent on products bearing our seal in 2025 compared to the previous year.

And with the impending EU deregulation, the voluntary “Ohne Gentechnik” label is likely to become even more important in future – despite all the challenges the new regulations will bring for our sector.

This tension will also be the focus of the Non-GMO Summit on 13 May in Frankfurt. This key industry gathering is therefore particularly important this time around for debating the future of “Ohne Gentechnik” and will be opened with welcoming addresses by the German Minister of Agriculture, Alois Rainer, and the Austrian State Secretary for Consumer Protection, Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig. We look forward to seeing you there!

Meanwhile, there is renewed movement in the final stages of the EU deregulation of new genetic engineering. The European Parliament could still call for further improvements in its final vote on the matter, and there is a whole range of new initiatives for businesses and consumers to make their voices heard by policymakers.

We wish you a happy Easter and a sunny spring!

The "Ohne Gentechnik" market grows to over 18 billion euros

Around 18.1 billion euros were spent on "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) food in Germany in 2025, over a billion more than in 2024. A change in the law could soon lead to even stronger growth.

Constructive exchange between VLOG and German Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer

The German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) met with Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer (CSU) to discuss the future of "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) in light of the upcoming EU deregulation for new genetic engineering (NGT).

German state agriculture ministers call for coexistence regulations for new genetic engineering

At their spring conference of agriculture ministers (AMC) in Bad Reichenhall, the agriculture ministers of 12 German states called for national coexistence regulations and restrictions on patenting for new genetic engineering (NGT).

Continued resistance to EU deregulation of new genetic engineering

The final approval of the EU deregulation for plants made from new genetic engineering (NGT) seemed like nothing but a mere formality. But there is further resistance and delays.

Non-GMO Summit: Have you got your ticket yet?

What does the imminent new EU regulation mean for the “Ohne Gentechnik” sector? What do the new regulations look like in detail, and how can the industry deal with them? What risks and opportunities are involved? What do consumers expect? Initial answers will be provided at this year’s Non-GMO Summit on 13 May in Frankfurt, which will be opened by German Minister of Agriculture Alois Rainer with a video message. The rest of the programme is now almost complete. Secure your ticket now for this key industry gathering!

Recognition of the ProTerra Standard enables certification outside of the EU

From 2026, the VLOG will recognise certifications issued by the Dutch ProTerra Foundation as equivalent. This means that, for the first time, certification will be possible for food produced outside of the EU.

Biofach 2026: "Ohne Gentechnik" and organic go hand in hand for GMO-free food

At this year's Biofach trade show in Nuremberg, Germany, the topic of GMO-free food was a particular focus in view of the upcoming EU deregulation for new genetic engineering (NGT).

USA: GMO labelling required also for highly processed food ingredients

A ruling by a U.S. appeals court calls for the extension of mandatory labelling to foods produced with genetically modified (GM) ingredients. Until now, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulation stipulated that foods without detectable genetically modified genetic material did not have to be labelled as genetically modified.
