German food businesses launch new initiative for freedom of choice regarding genetic engineering in food

Well-known personalities from the German food industry have today launched a new corporate initiative for the preservation of labeling and freedom of choice regarding genetically modified food.

No majority in favour of GMO deregulation among EU agriculture ministers

The Spanish EU Council Presidency has failed in its attempt to gain a sufficient majority of Member States in favour of genetic engineering deregulation in a rush job. This, at least, means a brief break in the debate.

Major retailers in favour of clear GMO regulations and stable food prices

In a joint open letter, food retailers from Germany and Austria have appealed to the EU Commission and the European Parliament to secure freedom of choice, "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non GMO) and organic farming and stable food prices in the planned GMO re-regulation.

Anuga 2023: Manufacturers and retailers call for the preservation of GMO labelling

At the Anuga food fair, food businesses from REWE Group to Rapunzel Naturkost, together with the German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) and the Association of Organic Food Processors (AöL), have appealed to politicians in Berlin and Brussels to preserve the current full GMO labelling.

Survey: "Ohne GenTechnik" should not include any new genetic engineering either

81 percent of people familiar with the "Ohne GenTechnik" (Non-GMO) seal expect it to exclude also new genetic engineering such as CRISPR. The EU Commission's deregulation plans are therefore a major challenge for producers and retailers.

GMO-free milk has become mainstream

Almost four out of every five litres of milk in Germany is produced GMO-free. In 2022, conventional "Ohne Gentechnik" [Non-GMO] (73.4 percent) and organic milk (4.3 percent) together accounted for almost 78 percent of the total milk volume in Germany.

Survey: Almost everyone wants labelling and risk assessment for new genetic engineering

92 percent of all Germans want new genetic engineering in food to be labelled at all times. As many as 96 percent endorse mandatory risk assessment for plants produced with CRISPR etc.

Expert opinion: EU Commission's genetic engineering plans are illegal

The EU Commission's plans to deregulate genetic engineering violate the "EU Constitution", according to a legal opinion. For food manufacturers, the result would also be significant legal uncertainties.

The EU Commission wants to abolish risk assessment, approval procedures, and compulsory labelling for a large segment of "new genetic engineering" plants. This would be the end of transparency and freedom of choice.

GMO-free requires dialogue and cooperation along the entire value chain

Consumers want food that is produced without genetic engineering and deforestation. There is sufficient Non-GMO, deforestation-free feed (made from Non-GM soy) available for the European market, but equitable supply relationships and long-term contracts are necessary to ensure the supply security. Stable growth for "Ohne Gentechnik"

In 2022, sales of "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) products in Germany have increased by about 21 percent to almost 16 billion euros. For eggs, the growth was even stronger at over 24 percent.

The [German] Quality Seal Monitor 2023 certifies, the green "Ohne GenTechnik" (Non-GMO) diamond has the most distinct content of the 20 food seals analyzed. To ensure that this remains the case, the EU's GMO standards must be preserved.

The EU Commission is planning to lower the standards for the approval and labelling of genetically modified plants and food. The German government should not support this, according to a distinct majority in a new VLOG survey.
