Food Trend "Clean Label" at Anuga 2021: Three quarters of milk in Germany produced without genetic engineering

- More than three quarters of milk in Germany is now produced without genetic engineering, the share is 76 percent in total. Ten years ago, it was only five percent. The upcoming Anuga in Cologne, Germany, will put the spotlight on the boom in "Ohne Gentechnik" [Non-GMO] and other "clean labels" starting October 9, and VLOG will also be present at the central food trade fair.

"The development in 'Ohne Gentechnik' milk is an enormous success story. From a niche product, it has already become almost the general standard within just ten years. Three out of four liters of milk in Germany are GMO-free. The vast majority of milk packs are now labeled with the green 'Ohne GenTechnik' diamond," comments VLOG Managing Director Alexander Hissting.

"This success story is a good starting point for us to use Anuga to campaign for many more food manufacturers and retailers to opt for 'Ohne Gentechnik'. This will enable them to fulfill their customers' desire for transparency and freedom of choice. The vast majority of them reject genetic engineering in the glass and on the plate. In addition to the very successful dairy sector, there is still great potential for 'Ohne Gentechnik' in pork and beef products, for example."

In 2020, 72 percent of milk in Germany was produced according to the VLOG "Ohne Gentechnik" Standard, and another four percent was organic milk, which likewise excludes the use of genetically modified animal feed, making a total of 76 percent of milk GMO-free. The trend is still upward. The figures were calculated by the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft AMI [Agricultural Market Information Company] on behalf of VLOG. Details can be found in the chart above and the linked table below.

VLOG will be present at Anuga from October 9-13, 2021 both on-site and in the new digital format "ANUGA@home". The VLOG trade fair stand is part of the BVLH Retail Forum and can be found on the Cologne exhibition grounds in the Boulevard, stand number 045. Info on all trade fair formats is available at anuga.de. We look forward to your visit on site or online!
