Greens clearly in favour of regulating genetic engineering

- The Green Fractions in the German and the European Parliament have issued position papers in which they come out clearly against any deregulation of new genetic engineering methods. That’s good news for consumers, the food industry and the booming German and European ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ business sector.

VLOG Managing Director Alexander Hissting comments: “The clear statement that Greens in the German and the European Parliament continue to support reliable genetic engineering regulation is very good news for consumers, the food industry and the booming German and European ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ business sector. According to a current survey by the federal government, 78 percent of those surveyed in Germany say that the ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ labelling is important or very important to them. This label works only if it says genetically engineered when it is in fact genetically engineered; for that reason the rules cannot be evaded. Consumers do not distinguish between ‘old’ and ‘new’ genetic engineering, nor are they misled by euphemisms such as ‘genome editing’, as the 2020 federal government consumer monitor shows."
