"Ohne Gentechnik" products sold for over 17 billion euros

- In 2024, around 17.1 billion euros were spent on "Ohne Gentechnik" (Non-GMO) food in Germany. The successful market is now counting on political support from the new German government.

Compared to 2023, sales of products bearing the green "Ohne GenTechnik" seal have dropped slightly by 1.6 percent overall. This is probably also due to inflationary effects. After large price increases in 2022 and 2023, particularly for dairy products, prices declined again in 2024, in some cases significantly. In this segment, "Ohne Gentechnik" sales were down from 11.9 to 11.5 billion euros, while they grew in the other two major areas of poultry meat and eggs.

Alexander Hissting, Managing Director of the Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) comments: "The figures show consolidation at a high level. Downward price corrections for dairy products have brought some relief for consumers after sharp increases, which of course also applies to the ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ market. After the enormous growth in the two previous years, we are still very satisfied at over 17 billion euros.

The new German government must ensure now that ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ and organic, which together generate almost 35 billion euros in annual sales in Germany, is able to continue to deliver GMO-free products for their customers in the future. To this end, it must work in Brussels towards a sensible and fair regulation of new genetic engineering.

A complete GMO labelling obligation right through to the end product is an absolute minimum requirement for industry and consumers. With such stable framework conditions, ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ will be able to continue to grow successfully."

At 11.5 billion euros (67 percent), milk and dairy products again accounted for the largest share of the 17.1 billion euro consumer spending on food with the "Ohne GenTechnik" seal in 2024. Poultry meat products accounted for € 3.6 billion (21 percent), eggs for € 1.6 billion (10 percent) and other products for € 0.3 billion (2 percent). The figures are based on data provided by the licencees of the "Ohne GenTechnik" seal plus a flat-rate trade margin and VAT.

The characteristic green "Ohne GenTechnik" diamond was launched in 2009 by the then Federal Minister of Agriculture Ilse Aigner (CSU) as a government-run seal at that time. The Association Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) is responsible for awarding and monitoring the seal.
